TCM Body Constitution: 8 Types, Imbalances & Natural Remedies

What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Body Constitution?

TCM body constitution refers to the relatively stable inherent traits in physical structure, physiological function, and psychological state that are shaped by both innate endowment (genetic inheritance) and acquired lifestyle factors – including diet, daily routines, and emotional well-being.

This constitution determines an individual's susceptibility to specific pathogenic factors and the tendency of how illnesses may progress or transform once contracted. Identifying one's body constitution is the cornerstone of TCM's "preventive medicine" (治未病) and serves as the foundation for creating personalized wellness plans. The goal is to correct imbalances through dietary adjustments, physical activity, and other lifestyle interventions, ultimately restoring harmony between Yin and Yang.

There are eight distinct body constitution types in TCM. Among them, all except the "Balanced Constitution" (平和质) are considered to have a more significant negative impact on health when imbalanced. It is also common for individuals to present with mixed constitutions – where multiple types coexist and interact with one another. These imbalances can be effectively addressed through daily dietary choices and the use of medicinal herbs, helping the body return to a state of equilibrium and comfort.
